This recipe originated at: This site has lots of great comfort recipes. They are mostly not in the clean eating category and definitely not low fat but still great for splurge days.

This is definitely not a low fat dish, but it is southern cooking at it’s finest. It can be served as a complete meal to manage calories.

  • 4 slices of bacon, diced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 head of cabbage, chopped
  • 1/4-1/3 water
  • salt and pepper to taste

Step 1

Core and clean cabbage. Chop into 1 1/2" to 2" pieces.

Step 2

Add diced bacon to a large, heavy-bottomed skillet or Dutch oven. Cook over low to medium heat until bacon has lightly crisped. Remove bacon to a bowl while cooking cabbage and drain off bacon drippings, leaving 3 tablespoons in the skillet or Dutch oven for cooking.

Step 3

Add diced onion to skillet or Dutch oven with bacon drippings and cook until tender, about 3 minutes. Add chopped cabbage to onions and add water. Cook for about 12-15 minutes until cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

Add the bacon back to the cabbage and stir gently to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. *This is also great without adding the bacon bits back into the dish. Just saute the onions in the bacon drippings and use the bacon bits for another dish.
